Is Your Laptop Running Slow? A Step-by-Step Troubleshooting Guide

Slow Laptop? Here's What's Causing It

A sluggish laptop can severely impact your productivity. The good news: most performance problems are fixable. Here's a step-by-step troubleshooting guide.

1. Check Your Disk Space

If your drive is more than 90% full, your computer slows dramatically. Delete unnecessary files, clear the Recycle Bin, and consider an external drive for backups.

2. Scan for Malware & Viruses

Malicious software running in the background consumes resources. Use Windows Defender (built-in) or Malwarebytes to scan your system thoroughly.

3. Disable Startup Programs

Windows: Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. Go to Startup tab and disable unnecessary programs.

Mac: System Preferences > General > Login Items—remove programs you don't need at startup.

4. Update Your Operating System

Outdated Windows or macOS versions have performance issues. Check for updates and restart if prompted.

5. Upgrade Your RAM or SSD

If your laptop is 5+ years old with original hardware, adding RAM (€30-50) or upgrading to an SSD (€50-100) dramatically improves speed.

6. Clean the Cooling Vents

Dust buildup causes your laptop to overheat and thermal throttle (slow down). Gently clean vents with compressed air.
